Things to Do in Retirement 2023 – My Simple Pleasures
What are my simple pleasures and why are they integral to my retirement? It’s no surprise that I share my travels and some of the more unusual things that occur on my trips. But I doubt it would come as a surprise to anyone, that my simple pleasures often come from when I’m at home.

Retirement is a time to relax, enjoy life, and pursue the things that make you happy. No matter how whacky! Whether it’s taking up a new hobby, practicing mindfulness, or indulging in simple pleasures, there are countless ways to find happiness in your golden years.
My simple pleasures definition: doing something that instantly makes me happy and grateful for having done it. Thoreau said, “that man is rich whose pleasures are the cheapest.” But my favorite comes from Norman Lear, “Life is made up of small pleasures. Happiness is made up of those tiny successes. The big ones come too infrequently. And if you don’t collect all these tiny successes, the big ones don’t really mean anything.”
What Are Simple Pleasures In Life?
Much philosophizing goes on about the simple pleasures in life, from Thoreau to Lear. Some suggest that the modern world, or the western world, became obsessed with the concept of simple pleasures when “happiness” became enshrined in the US Constitution. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
People even like to debate the number of simple pleasures (seriously, can’t I have as many as I want?)
What Are the Three Pleasures in Life?
In 2010, Nicholas Kristof wrote a great piece in the New York Times called, “Our Basic Human Pleasures: Food, Sex and Giving“. His top three pleasures in life could easily be anyone else’s. He based his op-ed piece on the work of well-known author Jonathon Haidt, “The Happiness Hypothesis” who suggested there were 10 simple pleasures.
What Are the Seven Pleasures of Life?
Willard Spiegelman is the Hughes Professor of English at Southern Methodist University and has been editor of the Southwest Review since 1984 is a believer that there are seven pleasures in life. I’m guessing that these seven come from his lifelong study of great literature. He identifies simple pleasures in his book Seven Pleasures as dancing, reading, walking, looking, listening, swimming, and writing. It’s a fun and quick read, and I thoroughly enjoy how he justifies his choices. Perhaps you will too! If you can’t find it at the library, the link above will take you directly to purchasing it.
These Are My Simple Pleasures
Here are my seven simple pleasures for retirees in 2023, and I hope they inspire you to find your own.
1. Make the Perfect Cup of Matcha Tea
Making the perfect cup of matcha is an art form that requires precision and attention to detail. To make the best matcha, it’s important to use high-quality ceremonial-grade matcha powder, which is made from the youngest tea leaves and has a smoother, more delicate flavor than culinary-grade matcha.
In addition to the matcha powder, you’ll need a few tools to make the perfect cup of matcha. These include:
- A Matcha Bowl (Chawan) – The Chawan is a wide, shallow bowl that is used for mixing matcha. It should be made of ceramic or earthenware and have a wide base to make it easier to whisk the matcha.
- A Matcha Whisk (Chasen) – The chasen is a bamboo whisk that is used to mix the matcha with hot water. It has fine, thin tines that create a frothy, creamy texture.
- A Matcha Scoop (Chashaku) – The Chashaku is a bamboo scoop that is used to measure matcha powder. It should be made of a single piece of bamboo to avoid any impurities.
To make the perfect cup of matcha, follow these steps:
- Heat Water – Bring water to a boil, then let it cool for a few minutes until it reaches around 175°F (80°C).
- Prepare the Matcha Bowl – Add around 1.5 – 2 teaspoons of ceremonial-grade matcha powder to the bowl using the Chashaku.
- Add Water – Pour the hot water into the bowl over the matcha powder.
- Mix the Matcha – Use the chasen to whisk the matcha vigorously in a “W” or “M” motion until it becomes frothy and creamy.
- Enjoy! – Sip and enjoy the perfect cup of matcha!

Whether you’re looking to learn a new skill or simply have a fun activity to pass the time, there are many simple and relaxing hobbies to choose from.
Here are a few examples:
Gardening – Gardening is a great hobby that can be both relaxing and rewarding. You can start small by growing a few herbs or vegetables in pots or containers or creating a larger garden in your yard. Gardening allows you to connect with nature, get some fresh air, and see the fruits of your labor
grow.

Knitting or Crocheting – Knitting or crocheting can be a calming and meditative hobby that allows you to create something beautiful and practical. There are many easy patterns available for beginners, and you can start by making simple scarves or blankets. This hobby is also great for socializing with other knitters or crocheters in a local club or group.
Painting or Drawing – Painting or drawing can be a fantastic way to express your creativity and relax your mind. You don’t need to be a skilled artist to enjoy this hobby – you can start by using adult coloring books or taking a beginner’s art class. This hobby can also provide a sense of accomplishment as you create something new.

Fishing – Fishing can be one of the most relaxing hobbies, especially if you keep it basic. Just you, your rod and reel, and the great outdoors. Ponds, rivers, streams, and the open ocean can be your playground. And a really simple way to spend some time with nature. It’s not even a seasonal hobby if you consider ice fishing. Yes, it’s even a great way to spend outdoors in the winter, which can be difficult if you don’t ski or snowmobile. Overall, taking up a hobby in retirement is a great way to find relaxation, enjoyment, and fulfillment. By choosing a simple and relaxing hobby, you can reduce stress, stimulate your mind, and discover new interests and talents. So why not try out a new hobby today?
3. Practice Mindfulness and Self-Care
Mindfulness and self-care are two practices that can have a significant impact on our mental and physical well-being, especially in retirement. Both practices involve taking intentional steps to care for us, both mentally and physically, in order to improve our overall health and happiness.
Mindfulness is the practice of being present and aware of our thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without judgment. It involves intentionally focusing on the present moment, rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Some common mindfulness practices include meditation, deep breathing, and body scan exercises. These practices can help reduce stress, improve focus and attention, and increase feelings of calm and well-being.
Self-care involves taking intentional steps to care for our physical and emotional needs. This can include activities such as getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and exercising regularly. It can also involve engaging in activities that bring us joy and relaxation, such as taking a hot bath, reading a good book, or spending time with loved ones. The goal of self-care is to prioritize our own well-being and make it a priority in our daily lives.
Here are a few tips for practicing mindfulness and self-care in retirement:
- Make time for yourself – Set aside time each day to focus on self-care activities, such as taking a walk in nature, practicing meditation, or engaging in a hobby you enjoy.
- Prioritize your needs – Make your own needs a priority, and don’t be afraid to say no to things that don’t serve your well-being.
- Practice gratitude – Take time each day to reflect on the things you are grateful for. This can help cultivate a positive mindset and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety.
- Connect with others – Spending time with loved ones can provide a sense of community and support. Be available for social activities that bring you joy, such as joining a club or volunteering.
- Take care of your physical health – Engage in regular exercise, eat a healthy diet, and get enough sleep to support your overall health and well-being.

4. Napping
While some will argue that naps aren’t a simple pleasure, they’ll say they’re a necessity. I don’t care what you call it…I love a good nap. I admit to napping more in the winter, curled up in front of the fireplace with a good book. Or at a friend’s cottage on Healey Lake in Ontario’s beautiful Muskokas!

I’m retired. I nap when and if I feel like it, and I don’t ever feel compelled to explain when or why. Perhaps that’s really the simple pleasure!
5. Walk in Nature
Walking in nature is a simple pleasure that can bring a lot of joy and numerous health benefits, especially for retirees. When we take a walk in nature, we are exposed to fresh air, greenery, and sunlight, which can have a positive impact on our mental and physical well-being.

6. Food and Wine
Another enjoyable and engaging activity in retirement is learning to cook a new regional cuisine or discovering how wine can enhance the flavors of certain foods. Cooking can be a fun and creative outlet that allows you to try new recipes and experiment with different ingredients. It’s also a fantastic way to impress friends and family with your culinary skills.
If you’re interested in cooking, consider exploring a new regional cuisine that you’ve never tried before. Whether it’s Italian, Thai, or Indian cuisine, there are many delicious and unique flavors to discover. You can start by finding recipes online, taking a cooking class, or even traveling to a region known for its cuisine.
In addition to cooking, learning about wine pairing can also be a fun and educational experience. Understanding how distinct types of wine can enhance the flavors of certain foods can add a new dimension to your dining experience. You can start by learning the basics of wine pairing, such as which types of wine go well with red meat, fish, or poultry, and then experiment with different combinations to find your favorites.

It’s a great way to unwind and escape into different worlds and ideas. Reading can also be a solo activity, allowing you to enjoy some much-needed alone time. If you enjoy discussing books with others, joining a local book club can add a social aspect to this simple pleasure.
