Wondering Which Outdoor Sedona Tours For Seniors Are The Best?

Author, Cynthia Ross Tustin – Updated March 31, 2023

What makes Sedona tours for seniors so great? Life in Sedona is been built around an active, outdoor lifestyle. However, “active” is a subjective word. As an “active” senior myself I know that word can encompass a lot of different fitness levels.

There is an outdoor Sedona tour for every kind of “active” senior. I have this as a destination on my bucket list because it has so many options that take physical abilities into consideration.

No time to read the entire post, I get that, we’re all busy these days. This has been the most popular outdoor Sedona tour for seniors with my readers.

  • Verde Canyon Railroad Adventure Tour

Ride the vintage locomotive through spectacular Verde Canyon, the train is the only way to access this scenic and rugged area. Travel in comfort and style.

Most people know that the entire area is renowned for the beauty of its extraordinary and unique landscapes. In the heart of the US Southwest, Sedona itself is a desert town and is located south of Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon.

I love that it is surrounded by red-rock buttes, steep-walled canyons, pristine rivers, and abundant pine forests. So if you love to be outdoors, there are few places that offer this much in the way of nature’s grandeur that’s easily accessible to vacationing baby boomers.

Let me share the tours that I’m jonesing to take! We’ll start with the Verde Canyon Railroad Adventure.

Please check with the tour provider if you have any questions relating to exertion levels or mobility issues.

The Canyons

Arizona has more canyons than any other state in the US, and possibly the world. This amazing Sedona tour for active seniors is more than a scenic train ride. It’s a history trip through ancient indigenous tribal lands of the Sinagua people and the American Wild West.

Slot canyons are carved through the sandstone by wind and water and are generally protected in some way as an environmental or conservation resource. They are fragile ecosystems.

And you get to travel on trails that were originally built for the stagecoaches that connected Flagstaff and Sedona.

On your way to Bear Wallow Canyon, the coolest name of all the canyons, you see some of Sedona’s famous rock formations like Snoopy Rock, Cow Pie Rock, and Merry go around Rock. There’s also the Damfino Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon, and the Mogollon Rim, which marks the edge of the Colorado Plateau in Arizona

7. Night Sky, Galaxy and Star Story, And Sedona Story Tour

night sky in Sedona

Book the Night Sky, Galaxy and Star Story, and Sedona Story Tour early.

Rating: 5 out of ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, from 16 reviews. Don’t let the low number dissuade you, this is a brand-new tour from a very experienced and knowledgeable guide.

Why choose the Night Sky, Galaxy and Star Story, And Sedona Story Tour? This 2-hour tour through the heavens doesn’t disappoint. It is pure infotainment! It’s a fantastic mix of ancient (Babylonian/Greek/Roman) constellation stories, that also includes local indigenous star associations. And none of the UFO stuff that some other tours. This Sedona tour for seniors is not for Mulder and Sculley!

The Red Rock Country around Sedona is as spectacular at night as it is during the day. And they are committed to keeping it that way. Eco-tourism is key to the area, and so is preservation. The sky is as protected as the landscape.

Dark Sky Community

Sedona is one of only a handful of places to receive a Dark Sky Community Designation. There are only 20 in the entire world that make this kind of commitment to the reduction or elimination of light pollution.

“Sedona is a great destination for stargazing pretty much year-round – with one exception. In the late summer months between early July and late August, it’s known as monsoon season in Arizona. This season lives up to its name, as storm clouds build up and rain pours across the desert on an almost daily basis. During this time, there’s a lot more cloud cover than other times of the year, which can definitely interfere with your stargazing prospects.

Valerie from The Space Tourism Guide

As Valerie says, July and August are monsoon season, and best avoided, especially at night. Monsoons? In the desert? Seriously? Yes. If you want to read more from the experts, check out Arizona State University’s website for the School of Geographical Studies and Urban Planning.

“This experience was so much fun! We learned a lot, laughed a bit, someone sang a little, and then we stared at the night sky while we got to contemplate our place in the universe and hear from ancient cultures. Chad was knowledgeable and funny and we just really enjoyed it! We kept talking throughout the whole next day about everything that was built into the experience. Amazing! Dress warm, the desert gets cold at night. Who knew?”

Casey P. (read more reviews)

Feel free to bring a non-alcoholic beverage and snacks, this is better than the movies. Remember to bring reusable containers or be prepared to pack out your own garbage. Please leave a zero footprint.

This tour is wheelchair accessible, has no limitations on service animals, and public transportation is available.

Cynthia’s Pro Tip: Dress warm, the desert is cool at night!

The horseback ride gives you the wild west feel, the mountains and the river crossings let you experience eco-tourism at its finest, seeing the ancient native ruins lets you get a feel for its past, and while riding through the Alcantara Vineyard, you’ll get a feel for its future.

What do guests have to say about The Guided Horseback Tour Only 30 Minutes From Sedona?

It was my first time riding and he made everything very simple. We rode through different terrains, through a river, through a winery and the views we’re breathtaking. I’m so glad I chose this specific tour because the other horseback rides do not have the same scenery. Thank you Tomas!”

9. All-Inclusive Sedona Join In Wine Tour

Book this tour with three tasting rooms, The All-Inclusive Sedona Join In Wine Tour

Rating: 4.5 out of ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, with over 80 positive reviews.

Why choose the All-Inclusive Sedona Join In Wine Tour? Should I have listed this Sedona tour for seniors first? This tour includes three different wineries, Page Springs, Oakcreek Vineyard and Winery, and the Alcantara Vineyard and Winery. All are gorgeous!

Each vineyard has a tasting room, and the tour offers 5-6 tastings at each. The number of varietals that grow here will amaze you. Zinfandel was one of the first to be grown.

What does the All-Inclusive Sedona Join In Wine Tour include:

🍷 Transportation
🍷 Lunch
🍷 Snacks
🍷 Bottled water
🍷 5-6 Tastings per vineyard
🍷 Souvenir wine glass

What do the guests say about the All-Inclusive Sedona Join in Wine Tour?

“The wine tour was a great experience. The staff at each of the wineries were welcoming, knowledgeable and provided exceptional service.”

Peter H. (read more reviews)

These wineries aren’t wheelchair accessible, but service animals are welcome.

The Wineries

Page Springs Cellars are producers of small-batch wines and have been in business since 2004. Like many vintners, they are genuinely connected to the land and believe in providing both academic and hands-on experiences for their customers.

Oakcreek Vineyard and Winery are a family affair. Established in 2002, they have a friendly, down-to-earth vibe, and their amazing wines are best enjoyed out on their patio with friends.

Alcantara Vineyard and Winery owners knew in 2004 how closely the climate and the limestone structure in Sedona resembled the best wine regions in France and Italy. They may be native to the state of Arizona, but their palate and their wines feel international.

Cynthia’s Pro Tip: This wine tour comes with a designated driver! Take full advantage of that!

πŸ“ƒ The All-Inclusive Sedona Join In Wine Tour is #9 on this list because I saved the best for last!

Is Sedona Senior Friendly?

People love this part of the US Southwest because it has a mild, dry climate. After all, Sedona is in the desert and therefore lacks much of the vegetation that causes respiratory problems (asthma) and allergies. It’s a hypoallergenic state! And the lack of humidity makes 100 degrees bearable.

The state of Arizona is well-established in its history of attracting retirees, and accessibility concerns have been thoroughly addressed. As an example, the trails and walking areas have been thoroughly marked. They are well-marked, and most are labelled for difficulty…like ski hills are. And transportation opportunities are abundant for getting into the backcountry canyons.

Sedona Tours For Seniors: Can I Hike The Backcountry Alone?

Yes. You can hike the trails in Sedona and the surrounding National Forests on your own. There are several excellent hiking apps to keep you headed in the right direction. Along with good old-fashioned maps and well-marked trailheads.

Above all, crime is very low in this area, so you’re safe in those regards according to the locals. National Parks do have rangers to patrol certain areas as well.

Take Some Precautions
If you’re heading out to remote areas alone in Sedona, you need to use the same precautions you would in any other remote area. Another key point in preparing for the weather is carrying a few small provisions and making sure someone knows where you’re going and when you’re expected to return.

If you’re totally alone, you may wish to consider downloading the On-Star Guardian App to your cellphone in case you need to call for emergency help. You know, in case of…”I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!”

What are the best months to visit Sedona?

Obviously, some months are better than others, and of course, it depends on why you’re going.
The months of March through May are considered “the best” months to visit. Springtime in the desert is when nature is blooming and at its best. The temperatures, ranging between the mid-60s to the low 80s, make for the best walking, hiking, or cycling.

This is high season, so you must be prepared for more people (lots of Snowbirds) and higher room rates. This time of year you can expect limited availability, so consider making reservations at least a month (or more) in advance.

And FYI. There are two big festivals in Sedona in March. The Yoga Festival, and the Mountain Bike Festival.

How many days should you spend in Sedona?

Is one day in Sedona enough? That depends. If you’re going for one specific tour, like the Verde
Canyon Railroad Adventure or the winery thing; then yes, one day is perfect.

But let’s not forget, that people have been retiring to Arizona for years, 36% of the population is over 50 years of age. So people here have found plenty of reasons to stay longer than just the weather.
One day is not nearly enough if you’re planning on taking several senior tours or wanting to explore on your own.

Indoor Activities

If you’re planning on taking any of the wellness classes, like yoga, or check out the retreats, then you’ll want to stay a few days. There’s a huge spiritual and supernatural community here. So you could get a Tarot Card reading and let those tell you how long to stay.

Finally, Sedona makes a great “hub” for you to visit some of the other famous Arizona destinations. There’s a seventh wonder of the world about an hour north called the Grand Canyon that might be worth a peek!

Grand Canyon and Sedona Tours for Seniors: How Many Days Do I Need For Both?

How many days should you spend at the Grand Canyon? If you just want to see it, then one day is enough. But if you want to “experience it”, then the State of Arizona itself recommends three days.

Personally, a week works for me. That lets me see both, although Sedona is my preferred base of operations. A week gets me to both canyons, out onto the Red Rock hiking trails, and still leaves me time to recuperate in a community with a thriving art and wellness center.

Is it better to stay in Flagstaff or Sedona?

This is a very common question. If you’re looking for outdoor tours for seniors, Sedona is the place to stay. It’s small, picturesque, and built around outdoor eco-tourism.
Flagstaff is lovely, but it has a more urban residential vibe. It’s a beautiful community to raise a family.

What The Locals Say About Sedona

My good friend, and author, Carlyn Bushman has lived in Arizona since 1987, and she has this to say about Sedona:

“Walking, both urban and red rock, in Sedona is a gorgeous getaway to stimulate the mind and body. Shopping areas are unique and offer artistic venues – so easy to walk around and feel that luxury of a very special place. Choose the quiet of red rock hiking at a level of difficulty you can enjoy – and move at your own pace to accomplish taking in the healthy outdoors!! Restaurant choices fit any menu and expense you wish to enjoy. Leave home to visit a natural splendor that is a true gift of vision!”

No More Wondering About the Best Outdoor Sedona Tours for Seniors!

And there’s a unique outdoor tour opportunity for virtually anything you may want to do. Sedona ticks all the boxes for most retired baby boomers – weather, adventure, history, culture, and physical activity.

Don’t delay in planning your Sedona trip and use the list of the 9 Best Outdoor Sedona Tours for Seniors to build your itinerary.

Cheers,

Cynthia
